Ambassador Anumula Gitesh Sarma (born 1961) is a retired Indian diplomat with nearly four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), which he joined in 1986. He holds a B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from Delhi University.
Before joining the Foreign Service, he briefly served in the Indian Audit & Accounts Department (1984–1986). Over the course of his diplomatic career, Ambassador Sarma has held several key positions in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), including Under Secretary (Europe East), Director (Central Asia), and later as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary before serving as Secretary (West) in 2018.
He has served as Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan (2011–2014), High Commissioner of India to Fiji (2014–2015) and High Commissioner to Australia (2019-21). His other foreign postings have included assignments in Moscow, Minsk, Odesa (Ukraine), Hong Kong, Islamabad, and London.
In addition to his diplomatic roles, Ambassador Sarma also served as Officer on Special Duty (IT Enabled Services) in the Information Technology Department of Andhra Pradesh, contributing to the state’s early initiatives in the IT sector, and later as Joint Secretary (External Relations) in the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
